ChatGPT and Claude Blocked on Sweden's Government PCs From October 26
Sweden's Government Offices will block the ChatGPT and Claude websites on staff work computers from October 26 and point employees to Microsoft Copilot.
Watch Gobi's Short
Starting Monday, October 26, 2026, staff at Sweden’s Government Offices (Regeringskansliet), the body that supports the prime minister and the cabinet, will no longer be able to open the ChatGPT and Claude websites from their work computers.
What’s changing
Sveriges Radio’s news desk Ekot first reported the block on October 23. In an email to SVT, the Government Offices confirmed it: “The browser interface for the AI services ChatGPT and Claude will no longer be reachable from the Government Offices’ work computers from October 26.”
The offices want employees to use the AI services they have approved, including Microsoft Copilot, which all staff have access to. According to internal information seen by Ekot, the offices also raised Copilot’s security settings after a review. The press office declined to give details, citing security.
Why
Digital director Mikael Wettercrantz declined an interview with Ekot. In a comment on the offices’ intranet, he wrote that using AI services without an agreement can have “consequences for our information security.”
The models aren’t fully gone
The block covers the public chatbot websites, not the underlying models. In the same email to SVT, the offices said staff still have access to the ChatGPT and Claude language models through Intric, an internal AI assistant platform. Ekot reported that part of the staff will keep that access. Swedish AI company Intric won the contract to supply the platform this summer, according to Techtidningen.
The Government Offices had already restricted the Chinese AI service DeepSeek.
Not the only agency
Ekot found similar blocks already in place at the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket) and the National Board of Institutional Care (SiS), while the Swedish Enforcement Authority (Kronofogden) is weighing the question.
This is a workplace rule for one government body’s computers. It is not a nationwide ban on ChatGPT or Claude in Sweden.
