AMD Unveils Helion, a Rack Design Built for AI Agents

AMD introduced Helion on October 12, 2026, an open rack blueprint for agentic AI infrastructure. It is based on an Open Compute Project (OCP) spec design and was announced alongside AMD’s keynote at the 2026 OCP Global Summit in San Jose.

What AMD announced

Helion builds on the open-platform approach of AMD Helios, the company’s rack-scale system for large-scale AI training and inference. Where Helios is built around GPUs for running big models, Helion is meant to let customers match CPU performance, core density and power with GPU acceleration for the work AI agents actually do.

AMD gave two example configurations:

  • CPU-only rack. Powered by 6th Gen AMD EPYC processors, it can support up to 32,768 CPU cores. It is designed for hyperscale customers, providing dedicated capacity for agent execution, with connections to separate model inference infrastructure.
  • All-in-one rack. It combines AMD EPYC CPU nodes, AMD Instinct MI350P GPU nodes and general-purpose compute on one platform, aimed at enterprise agentic AI.

Both can come in liquid- and air-cooled versions. AMD also says Helion includes an integrated token router that directs agents’ model calls across frontier and open-source models.

“Agentic AI is not a single workload. It spans personal agents, enterprise applications, code execution and complex workflows, each with different compute requirements,” said Dan McNamara, senior vice president and general manager of Compute and Enterprise AI at AMD.

Why agents need different hardware

AMD’s argument is that a single agent request can call business applications, query databases, run code and coordinate complex workflows, and the processors that execute that work must scale alongside model inference. Helion is AMD’s answer for that non-model part of the job.

Availability and partners

AMD plans to contribute the Helion specification to OCP. Helion configurations are under development with ecosystem partners and are planned to be available in November 2026. Cisco, Dell Technologies, Hon Hai Technology Group, HPE, Lenovo, QCT, Supermicro and Wiwynn all offered statements of support.

At the same keynote, AMD said its Helios racks are ramping production, with initial systems installed and running at OpenAI, Meta, Microsoft and Oracle.

Why it matters

Most of the AI hardware race has been about GPUs. Helion is a bet that as AI shifts from chatbots to agents that run code and use tools, general-purpose CPUs become a much bigger part of the bill. Whether customers buy into that will show once partner systems arrive in November.
