ChatGPT now lets you stay signed in to up to two accounts at once and switch between them without logging out. Only one account is active at a time.

How account switching works

According to OpenAI’s help center, account switching is available on ChatGPT web and is rolling out in the iOS and Android apps. OpenAI’s release notes list the mobile rollout on October 30. On the web you switch from the account menu; on mobile it’s under Settings, then Switch account.

Each account stays separate. When you switch, chats, memory, files and settings follow the selected account. Switching does not move chats, share memory or files, combine billing or subscriptions, or merge accounts or workspaces. Creating a second account doesn’t require payment; it starts on the Free plan. You can own more than two accounts, but only two can be signed in at once.

New card and device limits for paid plans

A separate help article describes card and device limits for paid ChatGPT plans:

  • If too many subscriptions are tied to the same payment card or device, ChatGPT may block a new subscription purchase.
  • ChatGPT also limits how many paid accounts you can use on one device. If you see Device limit reached, you can’t use that paid account on that device, even if the purchase went through and it worked at first.
  • The limits apply to Go, Plus, Pro 100, Pro 200 and Pro 500. Free accounts and Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces don’t count.

OpenAI hasn’t published a specific number for the device cap. It says these limits are separate from the two-account switching limit, and that signing out of one account doesn’t guarantee another paid account becomes eligible. For people who need more usage, it points to buying credits or usage resets on an existing account. The Decoder notes this will mostly affect people who rotate several cheap paid accounts on one device.

Shared usage with Codex in December

OpenAI also says that starting in December, Plus, Pro and Business usage will be shared across ChatGPT and Codex, measured in tokens, as Work’s agent features move into the main ChatGPT experience. Instant chat won’t draw from that allowance, and OpenAI says it expects most users won’t hit resets more often than they do now.
